THE MARIMBA
Being one of the first Belgian alumni for marimba, Kjell is always searching for possibilities to promote the marimba. On one hand he tries to do this in a traditional way by teaching and playing in a traditional way during classical live concerts but on the other hand, he tries to use the marimba in a more unique way by trying to use it in rock and metal music. Below you can find more information about what he's calling his solo project.
The Project
The project includes everything that involves marimba. The goal is to put the marimba in the spotlights as much as possible by using it in several different ways.
What is a marimba?
The marimba is a melodic percussion instrument that has wooden bars and is played with soft mallets. This way you get a warm and beautiful tone which is also the biggest difference with his more known little brother 'the xylophone'. Besides the fact that this instrument already exists for a long time, the big concert marimba is still a relatively young instrument that has been developed in 1985 by Keiko Abe and Yamaha. The big concert marimba has a range of five octaves.
